Mass spectrometry (MS) based metabolomics offers selective, sensitive analyses with the potential to identify metabolites. The analytical platform at OWL includes several liquid-chromatography interfaced mass spectrometers ideally suited to metabolomics applications.


AB Sciex QTRAP 6500

The AB SCIEX QTRAP® 6500 LC/MS/MS System is a unique tandem mass spectrometer, capable of functioning as either a dedicated triple quadrupole mass spectrometer for quantitative workflows or as a highly-sensitive linear ion trap mass spectrometer for qualitative workflows. QTRAP® Technology can also increase selectivity by reducing interferences for quantitative applications using the MRM3 workflow in which the MRM transition is based on the MS/MS/MS fragmentation pattern of the compound of interest. The patented IonDrive™  Technology introduces a series of advancements that increase the quantity of ions produced while enhancing the way ions are transmitted and detected, resulting in an improvement of the limits of quantitation. With optimized scan speeds up to 20,000 Da/sec and with polarity switching speeds of 20 msec, the QTrap 6500 is perfectly optimized for coupling with Ultra-High Performance Liquid Chromatography (UHPLC) systems.


Waters Xevo G2 QTof

The Xevo G2 QTof mass spectrometer, with UPLC/MSE and QuanTof technology, offers exceptional levels of sensitivity, selectivity, in-spectrum dynamic range, speed of analysis, quantitative accuracy and exact mass performance simultaneously for any experiment, whether UPLC/MS, MSE or MS/MS. The system has implemented the IntelliStart technology that provides a simple and automated system check procedure to ensure that the LC/MS system is operating properly. The Xevo G2 QTof is designed to produce accurate quantitative and qualitative information on increasingly large numbers of samples when doing metabolite identification, metabolite profiling, etc. 


Waters Q-ToF Premier

The Q-Tof Premier is a quadrupole orthogonal acceleration time-of-flight (oa-TOF) mass spectrometer that delivers high sensitivity, resolution, and exact mass measurements. The design of this instrument allows MS data to be captured with alternating low-and high collision cell energy. This MSE approach can be used to obtain both precursor and product ion information in the same analytical run to yield the highest confidence in structural elucidation and databank search results. In addition to these features, the Q-Tof Premier can perform MSMS experiments allowing the accurately identification of new metabolites.


Waters LCT Premier XE

The LCT Premier XE benchtop orthogonal acceleration time-of-flight (oa-TOF) mass spectrometer delivers high sensitivity, resolution, and exact mass measurements for LC/MS applications. Its fast data acquisition rates and automated workflow features match the requirements for MS detection under UPLC conditions. These features make the LCT Premier XE a versatile tool for a wide range of analytical challenges, such as biological fluid, tissue or cell extract analysis, where it can be found hundreds to thousands of metabolites.

The ACQUITY SQD combines the resolution, sensitivity, and speed of UltraPerformance technology with single quadrupole MS detection. Designed specifically for UPLC/MS analysis, it offers a simple yet powerful solution for multi-tasking, fast-paced laboratory environments – with robust and reliable performance, and walk-up operation for any expertise level.


Waters Acquity UPLC

UPLC Technology is a highly robust, dependable, and reproducible system that using sub 2-µm particle technology allows working at higher efficiencies with a much wider range of linear velocities, flow rates, and backpressures to provide optimum chromatographic resolution and sensitivity, essential for high throughput metabolite analysis.


Data Analysis

The analytical platform is supported by a state-of-the-art suite of software products complemented by powerful visualisation tools, allowing complex data sets to be transformed into informative charts and graphs.


OWL has developed OWL Stat App, an easy-to-use web application for metabolomics data analysis. It combines powerful univariate and multivariate data analysis with pathway mapping tools and visualization capacities to facilitate interpretation of the results.


OWL Stat App is accessible independently of the operating system and without the need to install programs locally. This application combines the R-based analytical tools with metabolite identification and pathway mapping tools, overlaying the users data on the pathway mapping libraries of SMPDB (The Small Molecule Pathway Database) and pathway libraries originally developed in our laboratory.
